Random Words / Image Association

Random words is about how you generate a new idea. This is the greatest way to generate new ideas. This concept automatically provoke reaction from our brain to start thinking compare to mind map or brainstorm of finding solution.

There are 3 steps which we have to follow;

1. Discover
    - First, write down anything that come in your mind when thinking about problem you are facing. Write down
      all the problems as you can.

2. Finding Associate
    - Relate each random word of the problems you wrote down.

3. Use Associate To Create New Ideas
    - Apply the random words to find a solution to solve your problems.

Example of my problem;

Problem: How to train 3 students to become Creative Studies Tutors in 6 months time?
Random words: Monkey

From the word monkey, try to elaborate things about monkey that we thought. For an example as shown below;
  • Zoo
  • Banana
  • Tail
Begin to associate the 1st idea to solve problem by describe about Zoo:
No animals like to be in captivity
In practice:
No student like to being push in class. So, don't strict in giving an assignment.

Next is the 2nd idea which is Banana:
Monkey like to be rewarded with banana
In practice:
Reward students with something that value in order to motivate them to achieve desire target.

Finally is the 3rd idea which is about Tail:
Monkey doesn't like to play with its tail
In practice:
Don't stress student with a lot of assignment. Always motivate student how to score for Creative Studies Subject.

Example of other random words;
Bubble Gum
- air blows out
- sticky
- elastic
- bubble pops out

So, this is one of the example of random words which I choose and we can use to solve problems in different angle and able to create a new concept. Sometimes it takes longer time for us to understand this method but once we have mastered this way, we can solve our problems in a very short period of time.

Scary Image

We were asked to create a scary image or object that will instill fear through out the ages. The image which was given to us is a picture of a Kitten. After creating scary image based on Kitten, we have to write down the statement based on drawing of how those picture will be instill fear through out the ages. The picture are as shown below;

This is my scary kitten which I drawn by using Adobe Illustrator CS4. I named this kitten as Kitrox.

Juxtaposition

Juxtaposition is about a placing and being placed in nearness or contiguity, or side by side, as a juxtaposition of words. The act of juxtaposition is to place two objects or word next to each other. When two things put side by side, conflict between right brain and left brain happens.

Generally people consider Juxtaposition is synonymous to Contradiction, Paradox, Incongruent, etc. But more than that, Juxtaposition has a sense of nearness. Therefore, I conclude that Juxtaposition is contrasts that being placed together in close proximity, or side by side. They are being placed, so we can see the differences and the similarities. Simpler word; Applying Contrast side by side.
Examples of Juxtaposition;

  • Youth and old age;
  • Servants and nobles;
  • Love-sick Romeo and fiery Tybalt;
  • The noisy public feast and the private whispers of the lovers;
  • Romeo's infatuation and Juliet's wit;
  • The old nurse and young Juliet; and so on.
The Benefits of Juxtaposition are;
  • Make a clear different of 2 objects, and learn from the object.
  • Obvious contrast makes us analyze things clearly.
  • Can have it as a revision, review and adjustment point.
  • Make a correction from that comparison.
This picture shows the act positioning close together (or side by side); "it is the result of the juxtaposition of contrasting colors".

Visual Puns
This is about creating an artwork which several form which look alike are connected and combined. Visual puns lower vision of visual metaphor.
STUPID LIKE A COW

There are two types of analogy can be found:

a. Metaphor
   - It is a figure of speech in which two different things are
      linked by similarity. It is not using with the word  "as"
      and "like". For an example; Life is a box of candy and you
      will never know what you will get it.

b. Similes
    - It is a figure of speech comparing two unlike things, often
       introduced with the words "like" or "as". For an
       example; Her smile is like as sweet as candy.

Besides that, there are two category of analogy which is;

a. Logical analogy
   - Use similarities in design
   - Connect back to the subject
   - Comparison of bird and plane
   - Like for an example, Comparison of the whale and a submarine

b. Affective analogy
    - Uses emotional resemblance
    - Explain a certain characteristic of a person
    - Emphasis certain points
    - Like for an example, Construction workers working like ants.

Exercises In Class
We were asked to 3 sets of number from 00 - 99. The numbers represents words which is shown below;

1. Flower                                                      Head         .0
2. Lightning                                                  Rain          .9
3. Ice                                                            Wood        .8
4. Light                                                         Tree          .7
5. Fire                                                           Spider      .6
6. Duck                                                         Root          .5
7. Dog                                                           Mountain  .4
8. Oil                                                             Wind        .3
9. Leaf                                                           Rock        .2
0. Fly                                                             Water      .1

The number chosen represent the combination of words like for an example 11 represent Flower & Water. The words arrangement according to the numbers is from left to right (Not from right to left).

The number I choose was 31, 59, 71. The words combination are as shown below;

  • 31 - Ice & Water
  • 59 - Fire & Rain
  • 71 - Dog & Water
After choose the 3 numbers, we have to combine those 2 words of each  number and make into a sentence which are shown below;

  • 31 - Ice & Water - The ice have melt into water.
  • 59 - Fire & Rain - The fire have been distinguished by the rain.
  • 71 - Dog & Water - The dog loves to swim at the lake water.
Then, after creating sentence, we have to draw based on what sentence we wrote. I used Adobe Illustrator CS4 to draw those pictures to make it look better. Those picture are as shown  below:

The ice have melt into water

The fire have been distinguished by the rain

The dog loves to swim at the lake water

After drawing picture based on what sentence we wrote, we have to draw another picture. This time, we have to draw picture which represent the combination of two words and create a new object or concept. This time also I used Adobe Illustrator CS4.

Ice + Water = Icewater

Fire + Rain = Firerain

Dog + Water = Dogwater

How Mergers Go Wrong
We were asked to combine 2 animal creature into a new creature which is possible to live in the earth. I have done 3 picture of mergers animals by using Adobe Photoshop CS4 by myself. The picture are as shown below;

Butterfly + Frog = Butrog

Pinniped + Penguin = Pinniguin

Snake + Eagle = Snagle

Of course those combination of animals are high imagination and it's impossible for those animals to live in this earth but you will never know the secret of the earth and nature because all of this those creation like humans, animals and plants are creation of GOD. There are certain combine animals which scientist have found in earth. So, I do believe that my imagination of combination of 2 animals which I have done it could be possible to live in this earth. Who knows, those creature which I have merged it might have exist in this earth which have been created by GOD. The picture below shows the real combination of 2 animal which have been found on earth is shown below;

Frog + Salamander = FrogSalamander

Analogy
We were asked to choose 3 out of 12 pictures and create poems that describe the concept of "Love", "Life", "Happiness", "Pain" and "Man or Woman" based on the pictures given. I have chosen 3 pictures and created poems which can be seen below;

1. "Love" based on "Chili"

I done this Love poem based on the Chili which represent chili as my beloved. I done it by using Adobe Photoshop CS4.

2. "Man or Woman" based on "Mortar and Pestle"

This poem is about Man or Woman which based on Mortar and Pestle. I done it using Adobe Photoshop CS4 too.

3. "Life" based on "Wallet"

This poem also I did it by using Adobe Photoshop CS4 which is about life based on wallet.

The Mortar & Pestle

mortar and pestle is a tool used to crush, grind, and mix solid substances (trituration). The pestle is a heavy bat-shaped object, the end of which is used for crushing and grinding. The mortar is a bowl, typically made of hard wood, marble, clay, or stone. The substance to be ground is placed in the mortar and ground, crushed or mixed with the pestle.

It is used as medical as traditionally used in pharmacies to crush various ingredients prior to preparing an extemporaneous prescriptionFor pharmaceutical use, the mortar and the head of the pestle are usually made of porcelain, while the handle of the pestle is made of wood. This is known as a Wedgwood mortar and pestle and originated in 1779. It can be used as drug paraphernalia to grind up pills to speed up absorption when they are ingested, or in preparation for insufflation.

It also can be used in cooking to prepare ingredients as well as grinding spices into powder. Mortar and pestle is used in Mexican cookingNative American use mortar carved into bedrock to grind acorns and other nuts. Japan use with wooden mallets to prepare mochiGranite mortars and pestles mostly used in Southeast Asia as well as Pakistan and India. India use extensively to make spices mixtures for various delicacies as well as day to day dishes. It also traditionally used in various Hindu ceremony including weddings. Malay called it as lesung and use it to grind meat for a type of meatloaf or kibbeh as well as the hummus variety known as masabcha. But, now days the uses of mortal and pestle have decreases because people nowadays uses motorized grinders because it it faster for them to crush and grind the materials to be used for cooking. Thai called it as kruk and use it to make pestosspice rubstapenades and vinaigrettes.

Mortar and pestle can be seen in many form. Rough ceramic mortars can be used to reduce substances to very fine powders. Porcelain mortars use for grinding some sand to reduce the particle size. Glass mortars are fragile and suitable for liquid. Wood mortars use to grinding salt and pepper and sometimes uncooked rice. Metal mortars are kept lightly oiled. There are even mortars made up of marblestonebambooironsteelbrass and basalt.

My Mind Map Of Mortar & Pestle
First I managed to make a mind map about mortar and pestle in a piece of an A4 paper but then I created a new mind map by using Adobe Illustrator CS4 by myself so that it will be more neatly and looking good compare with one I have done on the paper. The picture below shows my own Mind Map of Mortar & Pestle.

3 Creativity Ideas Of Uses Of Mortar & Pestle In The Future
Mortar and pestle are commonly use for medical and cooking. But, creative people will use mortar and pestle for other things which have never been thought or done before. Based on my view and ideas of mortar and pestle after understanding about it form many sources, I have come up with 3 awesome ideas which are logic and possible for us to do in future. So, I have express my ideas in a form of drawing in A3 paper. I have capture the image of the drawing paper using my mobile phone. The picture below describe about my 3 fabulous ideas which is a possibility for us to do.

The 1st picture is about the mortar and pestle which can be use as a "Rescue Tool". The pestle have to be connected to the mortar by a thick rope. If a small or not heavy animal like kitten or puppy is drown into the big drain or river, we can use the modified mortar and pestle to rescue the animal. The pestle role is to pull the mortar and the mortar function is to hold or support the animal which is shown in the picture.

The 2nd picture is about the mortar and pestle which can be use as a "Music Tool". The pestle function is to produce sound by hitting it at the mortar. The mortar can be as same role as a dram. So, this modified mortar and pestle can be use as a new music instrument to compose a music or music background or even sound effects.

The 3rd picture is about the mortar and pestle which can be use as a "Game Tool". A ball must be place at a stick and it must be stable and both side must be equal even though one of the side have the ball and another side don't have. After that, the player must hit the end of the stick which don't have the ball by using the pestle. Then, after hitting it, the ball will jump to the air and fall to the ground. If the ball fall down into the mortar, it means that the player wins and able to earn points like how we play golf and other games. The pestle is used to hit the stick while the mortar is used to catch the falling ball. It is almost like a golf game but with different style and ways plus technique.

Avatar
We were asked to draw our partner's face and write about our partner's bio in a form of mind map. I have drawn my partner's face and wrote my partner's bio by using Adobe Illustrator CS4 which were shown below;

This is my partner. Her name is Dhivanhi.

The Stereotype

Stereotype is a term that we put in a subject as a representation, on the contrary prejudice. It is a label that we put for a subject, mostly the negative side. Not all the stereotypes are negative. Example of stereotype: The Game labeled as ‘violence’. People make prejudice to represent a certain subject even though the prejudice is not 100% correct and exact. Its like when you hear a name or word, you will relate that to something else. It is just a representation that people commonly use it.

Man usually stereotyped as strong because they always go out of their home while woman usually stereotyped as weak because they always be in home to take care of family and to cook. But both of them can be strong or weak. It depends on the ability and characteristics of a person.

The Mind Map

Meaning Of Mind Map:

  • Mind -The part of your brain that thinks & remembers; your thoughts, feelings & intelligence.
  • Map -A drawing or plan of the surface of the earth that shoes countries, rivers mountains, road etc

Mind Map is one of the way to represent words, tasks or even images in a form of a diagram. It is used to generate and visualized for studying and organizing informations. Representing ideas in mind map can brainstorm us to arrange informations and ideas rather than representing it in a form of graphical and radial. The mind map is a concept of mapping. It can contain words or even images to represent something. It produce a relationship between the each ideas and description which form a concept and pattern.

It is a great tool of idea generation and brainstorming. It enhances both side of the human brain and widely used in taking notes, research or generating new ideas. A creative mind map able to stimulate and create interest to the individual and viewer. Our brain receive a lot of memories, knowledge, expression and experiences which sometime couldn't even save because the input is very high. To make the brain work faster and save a lot of things, we need to transform the input into a form of mind map by link those input and ideas to the subject matter. Mind Map can be produce in a form of words only, image or both of them also.

Mind Map have been used for many applications in personal,family, education and business. It is used for:
  • problem solving
  • individual expression of creativity
  • words and visual
  • enhancing work morale
  • collaboration
  • converting materials into memorable format or form
  • team building
  • framework design
There are 2 types of Mind Map:
  • Logical Mind Map
          - directly connected to stereotypes. It comprises of solely stereotypes words. Every word or image
             which is used is directly related to the central subject through its links.
          Usage: to divide and understand our subject matter clearly. The main subject can be recall back.
  • Associated Mind Map
          _ able to generate random words and also show the link between words that seemingly have no
             connection.
          Usage: to generate all random ideas in a good way and later can be expanded more. It is fresh and
                      relaxing.

The difference between them is that logical mind map is generally a mind map that is possessed of reasons, intellectual & argument while associated mind map is the techniques that we use to get good ideas where it generates random words, show link that have no connection.

Steps To Make A Mind Map:
  1. Start in the CENTRE of a blank page turned sideways. Why? Because starting in the centre gives your Brain freedom to spread out in all directions and to express itself more freely and naturally.
  2. Use an IMAGE or PICTURE for your central idea. Why? Because an imageis worth a thousand words and helps you use your Imagination. A central image is more interesting, keeps you focussed, helps you concentrate, and gives your Brain more of a buzz!
  3. Use COLOURS throughout. Why? Because colours are as exciting to your Brain as are images. Colour adds extra vibrancy and life to your Mind Map, adds tremendous energy to your Creative Thinking, and is fun!
  4. CONNECT your MAIN BRANCHES to the central image and connect your second- and third-level branches to the first and second levels, etc. Why?Because your Brain works by association. It likes to link two (or three, or four) things together. If you connect the branches, you will understand and remember a lot more easily.
  5. Make your branches CURVED rather than straight-lined. Why? Because having nothing but straight lines is boring to your Brain.
  6. Use ONE KEY WORD PER LINE. Why Because single key words give your Mind Map more power and flexibility.
  7. Use IMAGES throughout. Why Because each image, like the central image, is also worth a thousand words. So if you have only 10 images in your Mind Map, it's already the equal of 10,000 words of notes!

Creating Image of Public Figure

Founder of Google
This is the co-founders of Google, Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Both of them have created the most powerful search engine for the internet search. Because of creating such a huge and creative invention, they have become one of the billionaires. They are still young and simple. Google runs over one million servers in data centers around the world and processes over one billion search request and twenty petabytes of user-generated data everyday. Google develops a number of Internet-based services and products. People all around the world are using Google as their internet search because it contains almost everything single information and knowledge about the world which people want to know and survey. We can get any information we want just by using the Google search engine. They have proved to the world that they are creative people based on their novelty, creativity, innovation and invention.

Founder of Microsoft Windows
This is the founder of Microsoft Windows, William Henry Bill Gates III. Microsoft Windows develops, manufactures, licenses and supports a wide range of products and services predominantly related to computing through its various product divisions. Because of creating such a huge and creative invention, he have become the top billionaire from 1995 to 2009 excluding 2008. People all around the world are using Microsoft Windows because it support the whole system of the computer. The computer have become very useful because of the Microsoft Windows system which have everything people needed in their daily life. They can do anything they want just by using Microsoft Windows. They can create a file, safe it and able to edit it. There are a lot of stuff can be found in Microsoft. Most if the people around the world knows how to use it no matter what age they are because it it easy to handle and to be use. He have proved to the world that he is also one of the creative person based on his novelty, creativity, innovation and invention.

The Invention

Invention means the act of finding out or inventing; contrivance or construction of that which has not before existed; as the invention of logarithms, the invention of the art of printing. Innovation and invention are almost the same. It uses existing ideas and improve it into new ideas and ways

Invention comes from imagination. It also possible to develop the existing invention and turn it into something new. Some things need to be revised to create new invention. Invention needs imagination, dreams that no one sees before. inventing requires seeing things from other perspective and realizing it as a new thing. But, invention not necessary is unpredictable. Perhaps, it is thought but no further knowledge that time to invent it. Later on when that thing is invented, it becomes something new. It becomes something exist and real which perhaps it was only an imagination.

For an example, a camera phone can be considered as invention because it is a device which allow the user to take photos and communicate with others by talking and sending messages. No one thought about that before. Camera device and a phone device were different innovation. The combination of the devices is called as invention.

There are differences between innovation and invention. Overall, innovation is the extension of invention or the process of improving where it begins. Innovation relates to novelty and modernization whereas invention relates to creation of something new. Innovation leads to creativity and this can be applied to various aspects of life, right from industries to personal management. Invention is something fresh and not known to the world yet while innovation may be new to the industry or an organization, but it may not be new to the world. Invention is practical and can be assessed or felt by the people. On the other hand, innovation is a modern idea which can be applied to the present situation. Innovation is invention plus exploitation. When an idea of making a new product or process first occurs, it is innovation, while invention is the primary attempt to bring that idea into practice. Invention's concern is a singular product or process but innovation involves an amalgamation of various products.

In conclusion, invention is a creation of existing ideas into something new. Invention needs imagination to develop existing ideas. It relates to novelty and modernization of creating something new. Combination of invention and exploitation produce innovation.
